Concept 3

So, my actual images this week are pretty weak. But these are ideas and rough drafts of concepts I would actually like to capture for the book. I just need to work on lighting and capturing a more intimate essence of a musician or performer.

  1. The weakest images are the first set in general. None of them express intamcy in my mind. As you said the music images are weak but I think its a great concept, try taking candid pictures of the musicians playing instead of staged pictures. the guy playing guitar staring the camera down doesn't work for intamcy at all but play music can be a very intament thing.
The third and last image of the girl reading are by far the strongest so far. The model looks very natural and relaxed in these photos and they are compositionally strong. The slight mist in the third image adds to the the atmosphere as well.
I think you're doing well for such a tough subject to photography. It's hard to get models to relax and be comfortable enough in front of a camera to accurately show an intament moment. Good luck with the rest of the project.

  2. To me the third image in b/w is the strongest as far as trying to capture the intimate feel of a musician. It does have a feeling of atmosphere and his facial expression is what I think works. I don't like the guitarist staring you down but I can see where you were going with it. I mean, when I went to a Joe Satriani concert, and he looked at me and pointed at me while he was shredding, I feel that he was being pretty intimate with me as a fan. He even recognized me in the meet and greet afterwards. Anyhow, I digress, I think the b/w shot really does express the intimacy of the musician and his music best because he is not directly related to the camera.

  3. Images 1,4 and 5 work best for me because they capture the musicians doing what they enjoy. It's not that those images are weak I think its just that when people think of intimacy they associate with this something quiet and relaxing whereas music is loud or upbeat and that can be intimate too.
As far as the girl reading her book. I actually like all the images you posted for that one. But if I was to pick the weakest one it would be 5 because its hazy and the image feels hot and uncomfortable despite her content with being outside. I don't know what it is but it just seems too bright.

  4. Although you say these are weak, I think you have really captured a couple really interesting moments. I really enjoy the first, third, and last one.
I think the weakest one is the guy laying down although I think it is ok I dont think it fits with the rest of them.

  5. I think you need to expand more on your version of intimacy The b&w images are the weekest, they are very gray, with no contrast and major clipping. Chopping the head or feet is a nitt pick of mine. The strongest images is the last images caue you are wondering what he is looking at and color of the drum pops.

  6. I know you are still working on perfecting your concept but I think you are off to a good start. The one that really stands our to me is the last on of the man with the drum. I think it is really good! And I think it would look great as a black and white too. But I also think the first one is working for the fact that we are seeing the movement of his feet in the rhythm.

  7. No more large nude men. Ah well. Your first and last images are the best. Each subject appears oblivious to your camera which makes them seemingly more genuine than the rest. The others are either too posed or lack information around the subject. Also the isolation of whomever you are photographing is a good way to make the images work. The singularity points to intimacy.

  8. The first image is awesome--I think you have underestimated the power of the possibilities here.

You really have to work on cropping, as you crop way too much out and at awkward places on the figure. Be careful. Back up and take your time.

Keep going--lets see where this takes you!
